Porsche's least-expensive convertible does many things well: The Boxster has superior handling dynamics, exhilarating engine performance, great gas mileage for a sports car, a comfortable ride, and two trunks that fit lots of stuff. Unlike the rear-engine 911, the Boxster carries its engine in the middle of the chassis, just ahead of the rear wheels. The base Boxster has a 245-hp six-cylinder engine coupled to a five-speed manual transmission. The S version receives a larger, 295-hp six-cylinder and a six-speed manual gearbox. Both models can be equipped with five-speed automatic transmission that offers manual gear selection. A long list of cosmetic and functional upgrades is available, but options tend to be pricey.
